The following guidelines are provided to assist in properly
preparing computer graphic files that are to be imported into our CAD system, and for high
quality prints that are submitted for possible modification to comply with U.S. or foreign
patent drawing requirements. High quality prints submitted for modification must comply
with all of the guidelines below. General Computer Graphic Guidelines:
- If CAD files are submitted, they must be .dxf or
AutoCAD .dwg format (up to version 2000i supported).
- Half-tone shading, pattern or tonal fills and solid
black fills should be removed.
- Cross sectioned views must be cross hatched with
single, equally spaced solid lines at oblique angles.
- Words must appear in a horizontal left-to-right
fashion when drawing is either upright or turned so that the top becomes the right side,
except for graphs.
- Dimensions, center lines and all matter not pertinent
to, or referenced within the patent application should be removed.
- In design cases, views of all six sides must be
provided. Only one side needs to be provided if sides are mirror images. Provide a
perspective view whenever possible.
- Drawing figures should be separately numbered.
- Views of same device or parts must be consistent from
one figure to the next.
To minimize graphic modification costs, remove all
center lines, dimensions and dimension lines, vendor part numbers and any other extraneous
matter that is unimportant to the patent drawings. Consult your legal counsel as to
the relevance of information.
Additional guidelines for high
quality prints:
- Prints must be laser quality. Lines must be
well defined, smooth, clean and solid.
All text must be a minimum height of .32cm
(1/8") or 14 pt.
Individual drawing figures must not exceed 16.5 cm
(6.5") x 26 cm (10").
